Final follow up: For Daniel to revise his theory that "what happened happened" and embrace the variable, it's possible he succesfully jumped in time during his three-year Ann Arbor exile, building on the research he now remembers from Oxford.

To follow up, this is why Daniel was crying when he saw the plane wreckage on TV; he learned the story of the island in his Oxford jump and thought that somehow his actions during the jump would have prevented the crash. Afterward, he forgot the details, only remembering the sense of loss.

A thought on Daniel's destiny: From the 1977 perspective, it has only been half-fulfilled, as his apparent death will give a certain gravitas to his eventual reappearance.

Sorry, Phillip K. Dick... was going to refer to him by his last name, but that just read wrong. This is my first post, and I didn't get to edit before the clock ran out, but the exact quote from the book was "the Empire never ended," making me think DHARMA NEVER ENDED.
